It wasn't a quiet Easter for some and yesterday I found myself glued to the emerging news of "Smeargate" in which those who serve this country were exposed as having considered a smear campaign against the Tories. All on a personal basis to cause "destabilisation" within the party. All in bad taste. All in the spirit of if you've got nothing positive to say, destroy your enemy.
Yes the New Labour Spin Factory Ltd. is alive and kicking. Indeed, it's the only factory in the UK still working at full capacity. Thousands of redundancies
What I find the most offensive is that Damian McBride, who resigned when he should have been sacked as one of Gordon Brown's closest advisors, was paid as a civil servant, i.e. from taxpayers' funds, when he was clearly pursuing party political activism.
What a shameful day and weekend for UK politics. And the story isn't over yet, with talk of potential legal actions earlier today. One thing you should note here too: this story was originally exposed in the political blogosphere. The MSM were slow to catch up, having become so engrained in the culture of spin, delivered like a series of banquet courses over the years of New Labour.
I think we are all worried about the economy in this country and we have a government that promised to focus on it. But this weekend has given us the insight that Labour spin is/has been spending time considering smear campaigns, some of which at the taxpayers' expense. This is not what the populace expects and many, like me, are angry.
Don't expect change, though. The current regime has proven time and time again that this type of behaviour is normal for them and they show no shame for scandal after scandal. We have a government that has long forgotten it is there to serve its people and not govern like a dictatorship. It's a government in its throes and as the end draw nigh, how better to retain votes than suggest that the main opposition is composed of sexually hedonistic pleasure-seekers at high level? But that won't wash. If anything, a tide of bleach and Vanish is heading to the Red Ocean.
Some people say that history will judge this party and its government. There will be many reasons to do so and many things to remember. I, for one, will not ever forget the untimely and tragic death of Dr David Kelly. I don't believe justice was ever fully delivered for this man and his family. As Easter draws to a close, let's not forget Dr David Kelly.
