Book sales up in France...

Yes, indeed.  Courtesy of Book Trade Info, this site tells us more. Snippets:

  • January 2009 book sales actually increased by 4.3% above the same period last year.
  • The reason may be their relatively low price – 11 Euros on average per book.
  • During Christmas 2008, books became the “masses’ gift of choice” for the French, according to Céline Fédou, Head of the Book Market Division of GfK France.
  • Ronald Blunden, Head of Communications at Hachette notes that French editors take on “minimal debt”.  (Unlike some whole countries we could mention...)

Worth noting, I thought.  It's not all bad economic news out there.  This year's French Book Fair - Salon Du Livre 09 - starts on Friday, 13 March.  Friday the thirteenth, eh?  Let's hope they continue to buck the trends.
