Peter

I know at least one Dutch person who took slight umbrage at this book, of which I have a copy.

Dutch food? Try the appelflappen from Leiden.

Tot ziens!

Thanks Laurie.

I am with you on Dutch coffee. Lovely. They are pretty good on cakes too: it was my birthday when I paid a visit last year, so I had an excuse to indulge!

Pleased you found the post as Google ain't playing ball at the moment on searches.

Laurie

Thank you for this accurate and nice review; much appreciated. Glad you enjoyed the book. We don't like herring either (with or without raw onions) but do especially love the delicious Dutch coffee.

For anyone curious, we have some short UnDutchables videos on the topic of a flessenlikker (bottle scraper, symbolic of Dutch thriftiness) and Koninginnedag/K-day (Queen's birthday celebrations) on YouTube posted by Nederdutchess.

Cheers

Try the herrings? Are you taking the Michael, Norm?

I have a cautious and tenuous relationship with fish due to previous food poisoning (x3 at least) and seeing a friend suffer also (x1 on that occasion).

I also loathe raw onions and need mine absolutely or near caramelised. (I blame that on constant ear infections when I was a kid and the onion poultices my mother applied. Not that I blame my late mother as research and science moves on. But onions and I don't mix well, even now. "Not seen and least tasted" would be my mantra.)

I also hate fish skin because of its texture and scales. Yuck!

Coming up to XX before the year's out and I've never eaten a fresh tomato - all pith and seeds in my book. I am not about to eat herring in that way now. I think I'd choke.

Could be good for the diet though, eh?

Norm

The book sounds great fun CFR but you should try the herrings. Herrings and Oranjeboom or Heineken by the side of a canal in Amsterdam, heaven.
