BBC Sport Mastermind
The first BBC Sport Mastermind was crowned in the final earlier this week. Well, he received a rather nice glass bowl, truth be told. You can see the final on BBC iPlayer here (only a few days left). In his heat, civil servant Mr Chris Bell shot to the top of the leader board with a very assured performance. In the final, he won with a convincing margin. Many congratulations to Chris!
As pointed out by Des Lynam, Chris was in the studio for the final on the day of his first wedding anniversary. Asked Lynam, "What are doing here?" Chris replied that if he could return home with "a gift", it would help. On being presented with the bowl, he said "It'll placate the Mrs". Mrs Bell just happens to be one of my cousins. Congratulations to the pair of you on your first wedding anniversary, too!
Various members of family crimefic are feeling quite proud and delighted at the moment. Along with Chris's achievement, A level and GCSE results have also led to some excitement. Congratulations to you all!

Oh Sports Fan,
Come on, the bowl itself would not have been the anniversary gift! ;-)
To you and many, myself included as it happens, the prize for winning is not imaginative; it's steeped in history and conventionally conservative with a small "c". But that's not the point.
The point is winning. What better prize than to come out top of the league.
As for anniversary gifts, I believe the first year is paper. Mr Bell could have given Mrs Bell a roll of toilet paper, or a copy of The Times for the date they were married, or something more imaginative. I didn't probe. That's up to them in their private world and happiness is best prize there.
Perhaps the best prize was when her husband won and took the title? Who knows?
A more decent prize would be for the BBC to actually acknowledge its first winner of this new Mastermind category on its own website. If they have it up there, it is impossible to find. They seem to concentrate on seeking contestants for the next series...
Grrr....

Mrs Bell was no doubt impressed to received a bowl as an anniversary gift. I think not! Proud of hubby but "mastermind" prizes lack imagination.
