I know and understand your thoughts Clare, but I have to say that Clary, the man and author, came across as well-other-than-this at Althrop. He may well have fallen into various aspects of his career by luck - e.g. TV after the alternative comedy circuit - but he had a career plan of sorts and a will and determination with drive.

Much less can be said of his fictional protag, who was propelled along by the drive of others. Which makes for a great part of the plot in the novel MMF...

Thoughtful review - strange, you've just about summed up the impression I have when I've watched JC on the TV. There is an appealing sadness about him...
