Thanks for that illuminating story, a certain sinclair. You may also have found the link to the last paras in the book about JSP and Allen and a hospital bed.
Thanks also for assuring the maintenance of the "R" rating for this blog by using the words "shit" and "bullshit". ;-)

a certain sinclair

I fondly remember Allen from his stint as a presenter/interviewer with the newly born C4's programme Whatever You Want. I was a student at the time and I regarded him as something of a hero (another hero of the time was, strangely, another Allen - Tony Allen a brilliant comedic-commentator). The programme was one of those badly conceived yoof programmes of the period - and Allen was in a class of his own. (With hindsight, and for the benefit of younger readers sort of like Mark Thomas)I recall an interview he did with Shirley Williams - he really tore into her for her lack of anything like empathy for kids on the dole. She was visibly shaken by the fervour of his interview. An interview he did with (I think) Jack Jones (eminence gris of the then moribund trades union 'movement', respected Spanish Civil War veteran and latterly Pensioners' campaigner)Or maybe it was Vic Feather? Anyway it caused lots of shit to fly -- I vaguely recall attempts at arm twisting C4 to not screen it. Anyway, the long and the short was that hardened leftie friends of mine used to say at the time that Allen was a class collaborator and "if he's so right-on what's he doing on a yoof TV show? If he had any principles he'd resign". Right on cue - the very next week Allen did exactly that! Just walked off the show - pig sick of all the bullshit. I've always admired him for that.

Sorry Maxine. I don't know any more than that.

Thanks! And something else - a Comedy Store connection? ("Five go mad in Dorset" type of thing?)

Allen's ex-wife and mother of Lily, Alison Owen was with Harry Enfield after their marriage broke up.
Interesting old article here too:

I think I once saw him playing Kelvin McKenzie (Sun editor), which suited him well. And in my mind there is some Harry Enfield collection. But the main thing he is now known for here is as the baddie in Robin Hood. He certainly is a larger than life character-actor.
I think he and Lily are quite a family bonding act, actually, because the parents have heard of him and the children of her. (Apart from Malcolm the MP who has not heard of either of them, but that's another story.)
