sounds interesting i'll probably check it out. Protagonists that aren't just pure good always make the plot more interesting.

Bill, I can understand the disappointment, but there are still positives hanging around.

Word of mouth is good. Seb Faulks's Birdsong became a modern classic through word of mouth launching sales for that novel. I was ignorant of all that at the time, buying the novel in PB at W H Smith in Heathrow airport, on a whim, when seeing it on the shelves at the end of the aisle (a big promo placing). This was pre-blogosphere and in the early days of net development and useage.

I hope Chris can gain from what we have on the net now. (The converse being that the blogosphere and net usage has now become quite saturated, with many books being plugged, lauded etc.. However, those with quite a high rate of independent feature will garner interest and I think Chris's novel is heading down that path.)

Awards are great for various reasons, but they are also given based on the tastes and skills of those judging. Booker winners have been criticised many times over. Awards are great, but not the be all and end all.

When it comes to crime novels, I've seen a few given high praise that when I've come to read them, or even tried to read them, I've hated them or failed to get into them. One man's meat can certainly be another man's poison on times.

Chris can take much pride in his first novel; missing this shortlist is not the end of the world. He has a great book deal and a great (mass market) publisher to take him into PB, as well as a US deal. Disappointing, yes; but so many positives to take him much further and to make the public aware.

Like Susan Hill I too am surprised that The Good Thief's Guide hasn't made it onto the CWA shortlist. I just hope that those that did are half as good.

Sounds prachtig - as I expect they say in Amsterdam...(the cover is pretty prachtig too). You make it sound very enticing.

Billions of blistering blue barnacles, I forgot to look for this in the UK! I shall do my penance by paying increased charges to have it shipped here or by waiting for US release.

Thanks for this review, CrimeFic. I've been following this book on Susan Hill and related blogs, and am looking forward to reading it (one day!) now that I've read your review, which makes it sound very appealing.
Looking forward to the interview.
